WWE Smackdown 22.8.14 review - flying chairs

Here is my review of last nights WWE Smackdown

Orton Wants Respect from Reigns

Randy Orton opened the show with a promo on Roman Reigns, talking about how he was going to make Reigns respect him. Orton said Reigns won the battle, but not that war. Orton had the production folks play the footage from Raw last month, when he beat up Reigns pretty badly, including an RKO on the announce table, in order to set up their SummerSlam match.

The promo was really well done. Orton also said his opponent in the main event on this show, RVD, was just collateral damage. Like a good heel, Orton shrugged off his SummerSlam loss as if it never happened.

Seth Rollins def. Jack Swagger via count-out.

WWE has done a nice job protecting Swagger, even with his three losses this week. His loss to Cesaro on Raw was blamed on the injury he suffered against Rusev at SummerSlam and even here, Swagger got in a good portion of the offense before not being able to beat a 10-count following a curb stomp.

After the match, WWE continued to build Swagger vs. Bo Dallas, with Dallas coming to the stage as Swagger was trying to make his way up the ramp. All Dallas did was talk about how he could replace Swagger as an American hero. There wasn’t much interaction between the two, but they’re starting to build some good, logical heat between Swagger and Dallas.

Rusev def. Sin Cara via submission

Another dominant performance for Rusev, who submitted Cara in under two minutes. After the match, Lana tried to run another tribute to Putin, but instead Mark Henry showed up on the screen. He said he told Lana and Rusev on Monday how he felt, and they obviously didn’t get it, so he came down to the ring to explain it again. As soona s Henry hit the ring, Rusev bailed up the ramp.
For the first time since his debut, Rusev is starting to show some vulnerability. Ideally though, I’d prefer to see this start happening after he at least loses a match. Sure, Mark Henry is a big dude, but why should Rusev even be the slightest intimidated? He hasn’t lost, and he’s been a monster in doing so.

Randy Orton drew RVD via double count-out

Orton was relentless in beating RVD to a pulp around the ringside area. After smashing RVD’s head into almost everything he could around ringside before setting him up on the barricade and delivering a DDT. If WWE is going to stick with Reigns vs. Orton, and it’s apparent that they are, then they needed to do something to rebuild Orton after his clean loss to Reigns at SummerSlam. Showing the brutal side to Orton’s character did more for him than just a clean win over RVD.

Natalya def. Paige via submission (non-title match)

I see what they’re trying to do, with AJ and Paige constantly costing the other matches, but this isn’t the way to build two young, budding stars in the Divas division. Distracting your enemy for a rollup pin, for example, is one thing. Even though there are outside forces at play, making your champion tapout on national television probably isn’t the best idea. It helps Natalya, which is great. She’s accomplished little on television in the last year or so, despite being one of the best wrestlers in that division.

Goldust & Stardust def. Luke Harper & Erick Rowan

It seems that the Dust brothers are next in line for a shot at the WWE Tag Team Championships after this win. After the match, Harper and Rowan beat up the Dust brothers all around the ringside area, which is something we just saw about an hour ago between Orton and RVD.

I doubt they win the titles once given a shot, but it’s been fun watching these two not only get the chance to work together, but they’ve reinvented themselves a few times since starting to team together. Once their run as a team is over, they’re going to have a very entertaining feud against each other, too. That will be fun.

Roman Reigns def. The Miz

Total and utter squash, as Reigns wins the main event in about two minutes with a spear. Randy Orton had come to ringside and Reigns essentially stared at Orton the entire time he was tossing Miz around the ring before hitting the spear for the win. After the match, Orton got into the ring and the two brawled. Orton used a chair to Reigns’ back and was about to execute a DDT from the second tope onto the chair in the ring before Reigns fought out of it and hit the Superman punch.

It was an effective main event. Reigns continues to look incredibly strong, but they gave Orton some of his heat back by using the chair. Ultimately, Reigns still had the upper hand at the end of the match. If they’re going to rematch at Night of Champions, which seems apparent, they’re going to have to do something to make Orton feel like a threat between now and then. They have time, and I understand they’re protecting Reigns, but unless Orton feels like a threat, the match won’t be very effective.
